This beautiful Georgian silver snuff box is dated Birmingham 1827 and was made by the renowned Thomas Shaw, who was part of the "toy making" fraternity . Of conventional rectangular form, the front with vacant cartouche and the back with an engine-turned background. The hinged cover with a raised thumb piece and engined-turned borders. The sides embossed with foliate decorations. Opening to reveal the original rich gilt interior. Excellent silver gauge, feels heavy when picked up.
* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver.
