Description

This gorgeous and very unusual mid 19th Century silver mounted mercury* glass scent bottle dates circa 1870. The sliced-cut cranberry glass body cut to silvered glass, giving the effect of an antique Venetian mirror. The neck mounted with a hinged silver lid. Fitted with a clear glass stopper.
*Mercury glass (or silvered glass) is glass that was blown double walled, then silvered between the layers with a liquid silvering solution and sealed. Mercury was originally used to provide the reflective coating for mirrors. "Mercury" silvered glass was produced originally from around 1840 until at least 1930 in Bohemia and also manufactured in England from 1849 to 1855. The English examples were often cased with a layer of coloured glass then cut to silver as illustrated in the photograph.
