Description

This rare and exquisite early 19th Century French provincial silver "tastevin" or wine taster dates circa 1820. It is of shallow circular form with trailing fruiting vine decorations and snake ring handle. Both base and side hallmarked.
Hallmarks:
Head of Socrates, also known as "Le vieillard" , for silver items hallmarked between 1819 and 1938. Located on the side, a little faint but identifiable.
Maker's marks in lozenge, partially erased.
Provincial mark with silver fineness of 2 (800)
Dimensions and Weight:
Diameter: 7cm / 3 inches.
Height: 2.5cm / 1 inch.
Weight: 2.5 oz / 75 g
Condition:
Good.
Some unevenness commensurate with age.
