Description
This unusual and exquisite "butterfly wing" silver mounted glass inkwell is dated Birmingham 1923 and was made by the renowned Henry Matthews. The hinged silver lid with a glazed top encasing an iridescent butterfly wing decoration cabochon. Butterfly wing jewellery was popular in the Art Deco period and it involved using real butterfly wings (usually from the South American Morpho butterfly) to create rich blue accents. The circular glass body with a fully hallmarked silver collar. The back of the hinge with patent number.Hallmarks:
