Description

This exquisite Georgian silver "valise" or "satchel" vinaigrette is dated Birmingham 1823. The cover is profusely engraved with a purse outline and foliate decorations. The gilt grille pierced with foliate scrolls. It bears the marks of Ledsam and Vale who were part of the Birmingham toy making * fraternity. The back and sides with prick-dot decorations. Valise vinaigrettes are few and far between and this is a lovely example.
* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
