Description
This is a divine 19th Century French *niello silver vesta case. The front decorated with a pair of birds perched on a branch within leafy decorations. The cartouche engraved and dated 1885. The back with a single bird amongst flowering branches. The sprung hinged cover opening to reveal a gilt interior and a full and crisp set of hallmarks.The base with striker
* Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver and lead sulphides, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, usually silver.

Small French guarantee mark.
Maker’s marks JE for Joseph Ettlinger partner of Triefus & Ettlinger, 103 Rue du Temple, Paris.
Import Marks for London.
Date letter “G” for 1882.
