This charming and unusual George III silver snuff box was made in Birmingham 1816 by the toy makers* T. Simpson & Sons. Of rounded rectangular form, the flush cover bright-engraved with fishscale patterns surrounding an initialled reserve, the back and sides with prick-dot decorations. The beautifully executed flush hinged cover modelled as a purse. The front catch opening to reveal the original pale gilt interior. * From the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles. Hallmarks: S&S for T Simpson & Son. Duty mark. Lion Passant. Birmingham Assay mark. Date letter "s" for 1816. Condition: Good. Front in very good condition. Back with very minor unevenness, commensurate with age and use. Interior gilding in good condition.
