Description

This wonderful Georgian silver nutmeg grater bears the marks of the prolific silversmith Joseph Taylor who was part of the Birmingham toy making * fraternity. It is dated Birmingham 1799 and is in very good order, it is fully hallmarked, which was not often the case. The bright-cut oval body is the perfect size to house a nutmeg. The bright-cut domed pull-off cover opens to reveal the original steel grater. The base with pull-off cover. The lid hallmarked with maker's marks. The inner base fully hallmarked. The base initialled. It is a wonderful and complete example.
* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
