This delightful Georgian silver vinaigrette was made in 1813 by the silversmith John Lawrence & Co, a renowned Birmingham toy maker *. It is of rectangular form. The front cover is bright-engraved with prick-dot decorations. The rectangular reserve vacant. The back and sides with conforming decorations. The hinged lid opening to reveal a gilt grille pierced with floral decorations. * from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles. Hallmarks: J.L for John Lawrence & Co. Date letter "p" for 1813.
