Description
This is a rare and very unusual 19th Century French silver pepper grinder. It wade by Albert Beaufort in Paris circa 1885. The baluster-shaped body, with wrythen fluting and engraved cartouche, rests on four elaborate bracket feet. By unscrewing the cast finial, the lid can be removed to add the peppercorns and there is a movement at the base to grind the pepper. The grinding mechanism is activated by rotating the lid. The base has a very unusual and rather ingenious sliding bracket opening and closing the pepper supply. The lid has a square opening sitting flush on the steel rod with the finial neatly screwed in place.Hallmarks:

Maker's marks in lozenge, A B with a cross and two stars for Albert Beaufort of 198 Rue St Martin, Paris.
