Description

This finely executed 19th Century silver articulated fish spice box dates circa 1880. Realistically modelled in the form of a fish with an articulated body and standing on fins, allowing the position to be upright or laying flat. The hinged cover is the head and has a hook fastening. Antique silver articulated fish spice box. These spice boxes were usually copies of a Georgian English design and were around the 1880s. Generally used as spice containers, they may also have been used by some gentlemen for storing their snuff.
Hallmarks:
Unmarked but tested as silver.
Condition:
Good condition.
Hinge secure and strong but with some sideway movement.
Some stubborn tarnish between the articulated scales.
Minor surface unevenness on the fish head, as one would expect.
No repairs.
Articulated body works smoothly.
Fish stands nicely on its fins.
Fins undamaged.
