Description

This is a beautiful 19th Century French niello silver snuff box. The front decorated with niello geometric designs The waisted sides plain, the back with reeded decorations. It bears the Paris Minerva hallmark with mint mark 1 for a high grade silver content (950)
The hinged cover opening to reveal a gilt interior.
* Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver and lead sulphides, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, usually silver.
Hallmarks:
Head of Minerva with number 1 for 950 silver fineness.
Minerva with the lock of hair and with mint mark on the side indicating Paris rather than Provinces.
Maker's marks in lozenge.

Width: 3.5cm / 1.3 inch.
Height: 1cm / 0.4 inch.
Weight: 39 g / 1.3 ounces.
Condition:
Good.
Niello decorations with loss at the front as seen on images. Niello objects are very often partially rubbed.
Clean interior.
