Description
This is a wonderful little patch box made by the renowned Birmingham toy maker * Samuel Pemberton and dated Birmingham 1793. Of oval form, the hinged cover with an engraved shield-shaped cartouche surrounded by foliate sprigs. The sides with prick-dot borders. The back plain.
It is fully hallmarked, which is quite rare with small items of vertu and bears the marks of the highly collectable Samuel Pemberton.
* From the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
